The York Hop Store and Malt House News & Offers

Jan 2015 Newsletter

Happy New Year.

Here's wishing you all a very happy and healthy New Year.

Somehow 2014 seemed to fly by - either John and I don't accomplish as much as we used to or we have more on our plate. I suspect it is a little bit of both.

I'll apologise now , as I am going to try to post this newsletter on all three websites, to try to stay in touch with everyone, whilst saving some time. I keep attending social media websites that advise blogging, but I am nervous of starting another stream of consciousness that requires regular attention. We do our best with Twitter @highbarncottage @fieldhousefarm @yorkhopstore , but our input can be sporadic. For example, we probably haven't connected on any of the three sites for a couple of months now because we have just been so busy with other things. Our Facebook pages at Field House and High Barn get ignored for long periods for the same reason.

In larger organisations, there will be permanent office staff to do all these things, whereas John and I run the office in between farming, cleaning cottages, family responsibilities and a whole host of daily practical jobs that need immediate attention. What we do for a living is certainly not boring. It is so varied, we surprise ourselves at times by skills that we have managed to acquire.

2014 saw some quite major changes.

The Roost was completely re-modelled and up-graded between January and May. It was already rated 5 Star Gold by Visit England, but we wanted to push it to the very highest level of luxury, so it now has a new all singing, all dancing kitchen, a large dining area, a super-warm entrance area, both bedrooms extended and both en-suite bathrooms re-configured. The patio was extended too , allowing more outdoor space. It really couldn't be nicer. We're so pleased with the results, as are all our visitors who have stayed there. If it's some while since you stayed in The Roost, I guarantee you'll be amazed by the up-grade. Give it a try.

We also expanded in 2014 to a 2nd apartment in York in the same building -we've renamed it The York Malthouse. It opened at the end of July and has proved to be as successful and as popular as The Hop Store. It is a beautiful apartment - two bedroom, two bathrooms, flooded with light and interesting views.

2015's work began yesterday. We are giving Ostler's Corner an upgrade - new kitchen and new bathrooms and The Turnip House will also get a new kitchen. They are both rated 5 Star Gold by Visit England, so the work we do will push them both to the very highest level, like The Roost. It looks like both jobs may be finished in record time- ready for February half-term.

And today I submitted our High Barn entry for the Visit England Awards. This is the third time we have been entitled to submit an entry and the level of competition is extremely tough. We've never yet made it to the finals. I live in hope. From the fantastic comments we receive from our guests, we know High Barn is a real contender.

Oh yes, and for everyone's information, we now have reliable Superfast Broadband. Hooray!
