The York Hop Store and Malt House News & Offers

August 2016 newsletter

Some years fly by and 2016 has certainly fitted into that category. The York Hop Store and Malt House continue to be extremely popular and we find ourselves driving ever more frequently between the coast and York, just to check that both apartments are kept in tip-top condition and well stocked with provisions for the complimentary hampers. Visiting the apartments is never a chore for us. York is such a lovely city. If we have time, when we've completed our tasks, we might stay for a spot of lunch or visit a tourist attraction. Earlier in the year we ventured into the newly refurbished York Art Gallery and were so impressed with all that has been done there. Highly recommended. Earlier this week, we took in a show, 'Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles' at the Theatre Royal, also newly restored, and we enjoyed a very entertaining evening. Both of these venues are just a short stroll from the the apartments. Some of our visitors came especially for the Mystery Plays, this year performed in York Minster, and were 'wowed' by the experience.

It is very gratifying to have so many repeat bookings with visitors returning from Canada, Germany, Holland and other European countries in addition to all our British returners. Our booking calendars for 2016 have been excellent and we trust we'll continue to have many returners and new faces in 2017.

The first few months of the year were difficult for York, as the legacy of the floods over the Christmas period discouraged potential visitors. Actually, York was up and running within a few days of the flooding, but it took a while for this message to get through to the general public. However, from Easter onwards, the streets were once again full of people and the city settled back into it's lively bustling atmosphere.

We don't live in York, so we still discover new things to do and place to visit. One of our happiest, simple pleasures is to take a walk along the banks of the River Ouse. It is entirely possible to take quite a long walk or just a casual stroll and we notice that quite as many residents as visitors enjoy these riverside walks. Rowntree Park is absolutely lovely and always full of families and youngsters having a good time. And I confess to being more than a little attached to York Railway Station, so redolent of industrial history and the scene of so many emotional goodbyes and happy reunions with family and friends. It is impossible not to love York.
